Reminder that there is a Contemporary Service tomorrow evening (Sat. June 20, 2015) at 6:00 pm! The music is contemporary and upbeat. The liturgy simplified. More music and less talk, yet we will be proclaiming God’s word boldly! There is communion. The music will be supplied by a worship band led by our own Rachel Seleman!
If you have been craving something a little different then please come and check out our Saturday Service!
Coming on Sunday! The Women of the ELCA will hold a bake sale to raise additional funds for the Work Camp crew! It will take place after the service. And speaking of the service…we will also be commissioning those going to Work Camp, dedicating the prayer shawls that were made with love by St. Paul’s members and honor the Father of the Year as it is Father’s Day!
See you soon!
Hello Everyone! Today is the last day to order grinders and support St. Paul’s Youth Work Camp mission. Please call or e-mail your order to the office, secretary@stpaulstorrington.com. The youth are sponsoring a grinder sale on Souper Bowl Sunday, February 1st between services, freshly-made ham, turkey, and Italian combo. All grinders include meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and condiment packets. Cost is $6.00 per sandwich. Only a limited number of unreserved grinders will be available for sale. All youth and parents are reminded to be in the fellowship hall at 8am that Sunday morning to help make the grinders for pick-up between services.
For many years St. Paul’s has participated in the “Souper Bowl of Caring” on Super Bowl Sunday. The brainstorm of NFL players over twenty five years ago in an effort to help eradicate hunger in our country, the initiative took hold and millions of dollars and food items have been collected in communities around the country to support local hunger. On February 1st you are invited to bring non-perishable food and money to support local food pantries and the community soup kitchen. The 9th grade class will have soup pots to collect your monetary donations. Our numbers will be tallied and added to those of others joining the efforts and a national total will be available later in the month
We are going to make forms available for members of St. Paul’s to fill out if they find something that needs fixing at the church. A copy of the form is attached and will also be available in the Narthex.
And last but certainly not least, here is the newsletter for February!
Due to the inclement weather last Sunday we postponed our youth event….but never fear! We will have it this Sunday at 12:30! Trivia and a farewell to Lindsay as she gets ready to go to Disney! Please RSVP by Friday at noon if you plan on attending this event!
Okay and now what you have been waiting for….WORKCAMP 2015!
It has been decided that this year’s camp will be to Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio! The dates June 28, to July 4. We are now accepting registrations with a $50 deposit. The forms are attached on the link below. Please have your registration to us by February 6th. Below is some information about Cuyahoga!
History of Cuyahoga Falls:
The Cuyahoga Falls River has long been a main asset to this area. Due to rough water, Native Americans who used the river to travel from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi left the river at the Falls and used what is now Portage Trail to continue their journey south.
Cuyahoga Falls, originally named Manchester, was established in 1812 after Kelsey and Wilcox built a dam on the Cuyahoga River. A railroad bridge, flour mill, oil mill, and a saw mill would all later be built, leading to the construction of the village. Development would eventually move downstream upon the discovery of better power. The old village was eventually destroyed in 1826 when a dam flooded the old village. Cuyahoga Falls had been founded as an industrial city, taking advantage of the river power. By the 1970s, though, it had become a residential community. On January 1, 1986, Cuyahoga Falls and Northampton Township became the first two communities in the history of the state of Ohio to successfully merge by voter approval.
Cuyahoga Falls is considered a suburb of both Akron and Cleveland, but is actually older than Akron. While this area is known for its industry, it faces continuing challenges, in particular from concentrated poverty in some neighborhoods and difficulties in the funding and delivery of high-quality public education.
Fun Facts About Cuyahoga Falls:
Cuyahoga Falls is the hometown of David “Coondog” O’Karma, a competitive eating champion, entertainer, and writer. He has held world records in doughnut, hard boiled egg, and corn on the cob consumption. In 1974, “Coondog” set his first world record by eating 45 hard-boiled eggs in 8 minutes and 10 seconds.
Cuyahoga Valley National Park’s namesake river flows north and south. The Cuyahoga River begins its 100 mile journey in Geauga County, flows south to Cuyahoga Falls where it turns sharply north and flows through Cuyahoga Valley National Park. American Indians referred to the U-shaped river as Cuyahoga or “crooked river.”
In the movie Tommy Boy, starring Chris Farley, a plane ticket is bought by Farley’s love interest in the film from Sandusky, Ohio to Cuyahoga Falls. There are presently no commercial airports in Cuyahoga Falls or Sandusky.
